It’s a question that’s been buzzing around ever since the series aired. And who can blame anyone? The show’s authentic portrayal of Irish life, complete with local folklore, charming accents, and the ever-present drizzle, naturally leads to the question. Forte’s character seems to fit right in, like a pint of Guinness at a Dublin pub, adding fuel to the speculation about his roots.

Let’s find out!

Does Will Have a Long Lost Connection with Ireland?

Despite his seamless performance in Bodkin, Will is not Irish. Shocking, right? But that just shows how good an actor he is.

Forte, born Orville Willis Forte IV, is from Alameda County, California. His last name might make you think he’s Italian, and you’d be partially right. Will’s ancestry is a mix of English, French-Canadian, and Italian.

Will’s ancestry is a mix of English, French-Canadian, and Italian. Although he isn’t Irish, he has tried his best to learn the accent. But so far, he’s failed spectacularly.

In a 2020 interview with SlashFilm, when asked if he could do a good Irish accent after spending time there, Forte admitted that his Irish accent was the worst.

He said, “I would try to, as a joke, do an Irish accent for them while we were doing hair and makeup in the mornings and stuff. And my Irish accent was just pretty much the Lucky Charms guy, which they would hate.”

He went on to share a funny moment when one of his movies, made it into the Galway Film Festival. He discovered that his over-the-top accent was actually quite similar to that of President Higgins of Ireland. Forte joked,

It’s not a dead-on impression of him, by any means, but it’s in the ballpark of how he speaks. The way he speaks sounds beautiful. Mine still sounds pretty stupid.

Despite his less-than-perfect Irish accent, Will Forte’s performance in Bodkin had many of us fooled. So, while he may not be Irish by blood, his performances can certainly fool you into thinking otherwise.

In the series, he stars alongside Siobhan Cullen, Robyn Cara, and David Wilmot, among others.
