Peter Cullen spent more than six decades working in television, film and voice acting, but details about his home life were rarely part of his public interviews. That remained true even after the Canadian actor became internationally recognized as the voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise.
Following Cullen’s death at his Los Angeles home on August 26, 2026, at age 85, his family confirmed that he had been with loved ones during his final moments. Their statement said he died “peacefully, surrounded by his loving family.” Major reports also confirmed that Cullen was a father of four children: Clay, Angus, Claire and Pilar.
Information about his marriage is less straightforward. Cullen was married, according to recent reporting, but he did not regularly discuss his wife in interviews or provide a public account of their relationship. A woman named Brandi has been identified as his wife by people who met the couple at fan conventions, although her identity has not been formally detailed in major profiles of the actor.
Who Was Peter Cullen’s Wife? Was He Married to Brandi?
Peter was a married man, but he kept his wife away from the publicity that accompanied his career.
Entertainment Weekly provided one of the clearest recent confirmations of his marital status. In a July 2026 feature revisiting the cast of the 2007 Transformers film, the publication stated that Cullen and his wife had four children, naming Clay, Angus, Claire and Pilar. The article did not identify his wife by name.
The name Brandi has nevertheless appeared in firsthand accounts from people who met Cullen at conventions.
One fan who attended Fan Expo Boston in August 2023 described meeting Cullen and a woman the attendee explicitly called his “wife Brandi.” According to the account, Brandi was accompanying Cullen during the appearance and personally interacted with fans after their meeting with the actor. Another fan writing about a later encounter similarly referred to Brandi as Cullen’s wife.
Those accounts provide evidence that Cullen was publicly accompanied by a woman known as Brandi who was understood by attendees to be his wife. However, no reliable mainstream profile located for this article provides her full name, background, occupation, or a wedding date.
Cullen Had Four Children: Clay, Angus, Claire and Pilar
Cullen was the father of four children: two sons, Clay and Angus, and two daughters, Claire and Pilar.
Their names have appeared in biographies of the actor for years and were confirmed again after his death. People reported that Cullen was survived by Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay, citing The Hollywood Reporter. Entertainment Weekly had independently listed the same four children only weeks earlier.
Unlike their famous father, most of the Cullen children have maintained limited public profiles.
The notable exception is his son Clay Cullen, who established his own career in the film and television industry.
His Son Clay Cullen Became a Hollywood Stunt Performer
Clay Cullen, also credited professionally as Peter Clay Cullen or Peter Cullen Jr., became a highly experienced stunt performer.
His credits include major productions such as The Italian Job, Iron Man and Black Panther. He has accumulated hundreds of stunt credits and has also worked as a stunt coordinator and actor. More recent work includes Twisted Metal, Perry Mason, Ghosted, One Battle After Another and The Family Plan 2.
Peter even had the opportunity to share the Transformers world professionally with his son. During production connected to Transformers: Age of Extinction, Clay worked as a stuntman while his father returned to voice Optimus Prime.
Peter spoke proudly about that connection in 2014, when USA Today reported that Transformers had become a family affair because Clay was working on the film while Peter’s late brother Larry remained the inspiration for Optimus Prime.
Clay is married to actress and model Molly Culver, best known for playing Tasha Dexter on the television series V.I.P. IMDb lists the couple as married since 2006 and says they have one child. Peter Cullen was therefore also Culver’s father-in-law.
He Was Born to Henry and Muriel Cullen
Peter Claver Cullen was born in Montreal, Quebec, on July 28, 1941.
His parents were Henry L. Cullen and Muriel Cullen, née McCann, both Americans. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Henry worked for years as a newsprint executive with International Paper Sales Co.
Peter grew up with three siblings: Michaela, Sonny and Larry Cullen.
His Brother Larry Cullen Had a Major Influence on His Life
Henry Laurence “Larry” Cullen Jr. was Peter’s older brother and a decorated U.S. Marine Corps officer who served in Vietnam.
Larry served as a combat infantry officer from 1965 to 1968 and received the Bronze Star with Combat “V,” two Purple Hearts with Gold Stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon. He died in 2011 at age 70.
Peter and Larry were close enough that they were living together when Peter auditioned for Optimus Prime in the 1980s.
Before the audition, Peter told Larry that he was trying out to voice a heroic truck. Larry advised him not to portray the character as a shouting Hollywood-style hero. Instead, he gave Peter the line that became closely associated with his interpretation of Optimus Prime: “Be strong enough to be gentle.”
Peter later explained that he carried Larry’s voice directly into the audition, saying, “I just did my brother, Larry.”
