Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor whose unmistakable baritone gave Optimus Prime his voice for more than four decades, died on August 26, 2026. He was 85.
Cullen died at his home in Los Angeles, his agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed to news outlets the following day. His family said the artist died peacefully with relatives around him. As news of his death spread, the immediate question for longtime Transformers fans was what had happened to him, particularly because no serious health problem had been widely reported before his death.
As of August 27, however, neither Cullen’s family nor his representative had disclosed a medical cause of death. Reports confirming his passing have not attributed it to a specific illness, disease, injury, or other medical condition.
What Was Peter Cullen’s Cause of Death?
Cullen’s official cause of death has not been publicly announced.
TMZ, which first reported his death, said Cullen’s agent confirmed that the actor died Wednesday at his Los Angeles home but that the cause was unclear. ABC News independently reported that Kevin Motley confirmed Cullen’s death, while other major outlets including The Hollywood Reporter, Variety and Forbes also reported his passing.
His Family Said He Died Surrounded by Loved Ones
Cullen’s family released a statement following his death, providing some details about his final moments without discussing a medical diagnosis.
“Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family,” the statement said.
The family asked people remembering Cullen to follow the qualities he valued in life, particularly compassion, integrity and loyalty. They closed their message with a phrase closely associated with both Cullen and the character that defined his career: “be strong enough to be gentle.”
Those words had a deeply personal meaning for Cullen. They originated with his older brother, Larry Cullen, a decorated U.S. Marine who served in Vietnam and became the inspiration for the voice and personality of Optimus Prime.
Years earlier, Cullen recalled that when he told Larry he was auditioning to play a heroic truck, his brother advised him against portraying the character as a loud, stereotypical Hollywood hero. Larry instead told him to be strong while showing gentleness and dignity. Cullen carried that approach into his audition.
The phrase appearing again in his family’s statement therefore connected his death announcement directly with the advice that had influenced his most famous performance.
Did Peter Cullen Have Any Known Illness Before His Death?
No specific illness connected to Peter Cullen’s death had been publicly disclosed as of August 27.
Current reports announcing his death do not mention a recent cancer diagnosis, chronic disease, or other major medical condition. There was also no widely reported hospitalization immediately preceding his death.
Cullen had remained publicly active earlier in 2026. He appeared at TFcon Los Angeles 2026, where fans celebrated the 40th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie. Cullen participated in autograph sessions, photo opportunities, and a question-and-answer panel alongside Frank Welker, the longtime voice of Megatron.
Footage released by TFcon in March and April showed Cullen and Welker discussing their years with the franchise and their return to the characters for later Transformers productions.
His participation in the convention does not provide information about his private medical condition, but it does show that Cullen was making public appearances only months before his death. No subsequent health announcement identified an illness that would explain his passing.
Cullen Died Less Than a Month After Turning 85
Peter Claver Cullen was born on July 28, 1941, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He died on August 26, just 29 days after celebrating his 85th birthday.
Cullen trained at Canada’s National Theatre School before beginning a career that eventually became heavily centered on voice acting.
His defining role arrived in 1984 when Peter was cast as Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated television series. He also voiced Ironhide in the series.
Cullen later returned as Optimus Prime when the franchise moved into live-action films, beginning with Michael Bay’s Transformers in 2007. He continued providing the character’s voice across movies, animated productions and video games, including Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
He Was Also the Voice of Eeyore and Several Familiar Characters
Although Optimus Prime became Cullen’s best-known role, his work extended well beyond Transformers.
He voiced Eeyore in numerous Winnie the Pooh productions, giving the character his familiar low and melancholy delivery. Cullen once said Optimus Prime was his favorite role, followed by Eeyore, whom he described as “simply charming.”
His other credits included Monterey Jack in Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider and vocal effects for the alien creature in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film Predator. More recently, he voiced Thaedus in the animated superhero series Invincible.
Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
