Claudia Kelly Sundman, daughter of Arizona Senator Mark Kelly and his ex-wife Amelia Victoria Babisa, has shifted gears from her professional career to embrace family life full-time. The University of Arizona graduate, who once honed her leadership skills in outdoor adventures, is now tackling the daily challenges of motherhood.
Claudia’s career path took her from Houston to the skies above. She started in administration at The Houston Club before a brief stint in account management at STATWEATHER. Her professional journey led her to World View, where she spent over two years as a Business Opportunity Manager, from July 2016 to January 2019.
But just as her career was gaining altitude, her personal life took center stage. She got engaged and soon after, decided to start a family. This new chapter saw her trading boardrooms for nurseries and business strategies for bedtime stories.
Throughout her journey, Claudia has maintained a close relationship with her father, Senator Kelly. He occasionally shares proud updates about her life on his social media, giving glimpses into their strong father-daughter bond.
From outdoor leadership courses to the corporate world, and now to the world of parenting, Claudia has shown her ability to adapt to new roles. As she navigates this latest adventure, she’s likely drawing on all the skills she’s gathered along the way – applying them to the 24/7 job of raising the next generation.
Claudia Kelly Husband Was Her First-Ever Bumble Date
Claudia’s love story reads like a modern-day fairy tale. When she moved to Tucson, she decided to give online dating a shot. Little did she know that her very first Bumble date in December 2016 would lead her to Mark Sundman, the man she’d eventually marry.
Both newcomers to Arizona, Claudia and Mark hit it off immediately. They bonded over exploring their new home state together, turning every outing into an adventure. Their shared love for the outdoors and Tucson’s natural beauty became the foundation of their relationship.
After falling head over heels for each other and their desert surroundings, Mark planned a surprise proposal in March 2020. He chose their favorite hiking spot, the Hidden Canyon Trail, as the perfect backdrop. With help from some Air Force friends who went full camo to capture the moment, Mark popped the question at the trail’s summit. She, of course, said yes.
The couple’s journey took an unexpected turn when they welcomed their daughter Sage in May 2021, before tying the knot. This bundle of joy became an integral part of their wedding plans, adding an extra layer of love to their celebration.
When it came time to plan their big day, the pair stayed true to their roots. They chose Gates Pass in Tucson Mountain State Park as their venue – the very spot where they had their first date. Talk about coming full circle!
Their March 4, 2022 wedding was an intimate affair with just 46 guests, including baby Sage, Claudia’s father, and her stepmother Gabby Giffords. The couple even included their dog Shiner in the festivities, making it a true family affair.
From their first Bumble match to saying “I do” surrounded by the Sonoran Desert they now call home, Claudia and Mark took chances and followed their hearts. Who knew that a simple swipe right could lead to a lifetime of happiness?
Her Hubby Is a PhD Candidate
While Claudia has stepped back from her career to focus on family, her soulmate is diving deep into the world of neuroscience. As a PhD candidate in Cognition and Neural Systems at the University of Arizona, Mark is making waves in the field of cognitive health.
His primary focus is on extending cognitive health span. It’s a cutting-edge area of research that could have far-reaching implications for how we understand and maintain brain health as we age.
But Mark isn’t just hitting the books. He’s also gaining hands-on experience as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Brain Imaging & Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Lab. Under the guidance of faculty supervisor Ying-hui Chou, Sundman is likely getting his hands dirty with some of the most advanced neuroimaging techniques out there.
His work isn’t going unnoticed either. A quick glance at Google Scholar shows that Sundman’s published numerous research papers, many of which are being cited by others in the field. It’s a clear sign that his research is making an impact and contributing to the broader scientific conversation.
While Claudia is nurturing their young family, Mark is nurturing neurons – talk about a power couple! As Sundman continues to make strides in his academic career, it’s clear that the Kelly-Sundman household is one where both personal and professional growth are in full bloom.
She Initially Wanted To Dislike Her Step-Mother; Had To Witness Her Near-Fatal Shooting
Claudia and her sister Claire Kelly didn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for their stepmother, Gabby Giffords, at first. In a revealing 2011 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she admitted,
We were never rude, we would just never give her the time of day or treat her like we would any other person.
But life had other plans for this blended family. On January 8, 2011, the sisters found themselves caught in a family nightmare when Giffords was shot at a constituent event in Tucson.
The aftermath was a whirlwind of confusion and heartbreak. For an excruciating 20 minutes, the family, including both Kelly sisters, believed Giffords had died. Their father recalled the gut-wrenching moment:
The kids … Claudia and Claire start crying. My mother, you know … I think she almost screamed.
This traumatic experience became a turning point for the sisters’ relationship with their stepmother. Witnessing Giffords’ incredible determination during her recovery, both sister’s perspectives shifted. They realized this was their chance for a fresh start with Giffords.
The shooting and its aftermath brought the entire family closer, transforming what was once a typical “stepmom-stepdaughter relationship” into something deeper. The Kelly sisters’ initial reluctance to embrace Giffords gave way to admiration for their stepmother’s strength and resilience.
This journey from resistance to acceptance shows how even the most challenging family dynamics can evolve, especially in the face of adversity. For Claudia and Claire, it took a near-tragedy to fully open their hearts to their stepmother, proving that sometimes, life’s toughest moments can lead to unexpected healing and stronger family bonds.
