Terrence Duckett and Jasmine Guy married on August 22nd, 1998, after what looked like a promising and stable relationship. Their wedding took place at Will and Jada Smith’s home in San Fernando Valley.

Jasmine was shining from her role as Whitley Gilbert on A Different World, and Terrence, a businessman, seemed to bring stability to the relationship. They welcomed their daughter, Imani, a year later on March 28th, 1999.

The couple first met in 1997 while Jasmine was touring as Velma Kelly for the Chicago Musical. Things moved fast, and they got married the next year.

However, cracks started showing in their marriage, leading to their separation after a decade. Jasmine filed for divorce in April 2008, citing irreconcilable differences. And the whole thing revealed serious financial issues, largely stemming from Duckett’s sketchy investments.

According to divorce papers, Guy had a lengthy list of items she wanted to claim as her separate property, ranging from her wedding ring to paintings, bank accounts, her BlackBerry, and even pots and pans. She also requested spousal support and rights to her production company, the copyright to her book Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary, and other assets.

Despite Guy’s desire to keep things amicable, Terrence wasn’t ready to let go easily. He filed court documents seeking joint custody of their then 9-year-old daughter, Imani, while Guy was asking for her full custody.

Although tensions ran high throughout the divorce proceedings, Jasmine’s representative stressed that there were no “villains” in their breakup.

Their story, although ended, leaves many curious about what went wrong and how they each moved on afterward.

His Investment Strategy Reportedly Led Jasmine to Bankruptcy

After their 11-year marriage ended, the actress got to keep her furniture, artwork, jewelry, and cars. But she also ended up with a significant amount of debt, some of which is linked to her former husband’s bad financial decisions.

Initially, Terrence and Jasmine approached their investment journey with a mix of practicality and fresh financial strategies. Before meeting him, Guy leaned toward conservative choices, sticking to real estate and CDs.

Reflecting on this, she admitted, “Looking back, I wish I had been in the market because the nineties was a great time to be in it—even if I’d taken what I spent on shoes.”

After meeting Duckett, who at the time worked as a broker with A.G. Edwards & Sons, a financial firm based in St. Louis, she shifted her approach, embracing diversified investments in blue-chip stocks, international equities, and sectors like pharmaceuticals.

Duckett guided her toward companies she used daily, such as FedEx and Boeing, and his insight proved valuable, particularly with their investment in Philip Morris. He understood the irregular income actors faced and pushed her to invest smartly for the sake of their daughter, Imani.

Despite the cautious approach, the actress faced significant financial troubles after she filed for divorce. Court documents from the L.A. Superior Court showed that after finalizing her divorce, she had to file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy due to the tremendous debt they had accumulated together.

Jasmine owed over $123,000 in back taxes and penalties, while Terrence had a debt of $94,000, and both had to pay interest on top of that.

In addition to bankruptcy woes, Jasmine faced another battle as Terrence stopped paying child support for Imani.

She Called Terrence a ‘Deadbeat Ex’

Jasmine Guy didn’t hold back when she called her ex-hubby, a “deadbeat” for skipping out on almost $40,000 in child support. Court documents show that Duckett was supposed to be paying $1,469 a month for their daughter, Imani, but hadn’t paid a penny since May 2010. By 2012, that debt had piled up to nearly $40,000.

Frustrated, she asked the court for help, suggesting they garnish his wages, take his assets, or even put him in jail if he didn’t pay up. The problem was she couldn’t serve him the legal papers, so the hearing was canceled.

Jasmine knew she had to take legal action to get Imani the support she deserved. Her lawyer said,

Both parents have the financial responsibility of rearing a child. Jasmine has always met and will continue to meet her financial responsibility. She, however unfortunately, finds herself in the same position as are many single mothers in this country — she must enforce her child’s right to benefit from the financial assets of both parents.

But aside from all this, who is Terrence? What does he do for a living? Let’s talk about it!

He’s a Business Development Expert and An Investment Broker

Duckette is a business development expert and investment broker. Since September 2023, he’s held the role of Chief Strategy Officer at Tickety based in Los Angeles. He is also the business consultant for the company.

Before joining Tickety, Terrence served as an Independent Sales Consultant for UgMO Technologies from January 2019 to 2020. He also worked as Director of Strategic Partnerships for Soda & Lime and was the Chief Strategy Officer at OnPacePlus.

He Was Given Temporary Prohibition By the Illinois Securities Department For Securities Violations

In March 2015, the Illinois Securities Department imposed a 90-day ban on Terrence for his role in the sale of unregistered securities. As a salesperson for The League, Inc., he pitched shares to at least four Illinois investors between October 2011 and 2012 without ensuring the company followed the necessary registration rules.

He also failed to disclose a previous California regulatory order against the company, which served as a significant red flag for investors. These violations led to Duckett’s temporary ban from selling securities or providing investment advice in Illinois.

He Was a Star Athlete During His High School Days

Back in high school at Gary West Side, Terrence was the definition of a star athlete. In the late ’70s and through the early ’80s, he was on the track team, tearing up the 200 Meter Dash, 100 Meter Dash, 400 Meter Relay, and 800 Yard Relay.

Apart from that, he was also a member of the Gary West Side Cougars’ basketball team.

He Comes From A Big Family

Terrence grew up surrounded by a big family. His parents, James and Beverly Duckett, raised him along with six biological siblings—Janet, Mary, Winston, Debra, Robin, and Monica—and two step-siblings, Michael and Dietrick Gault.

His father, James, was a dedicated member of the Pastor’s Choir at Clark Road M.B. Church until health issues kept him from singing. He served in the U.S. Army and worked at Acme Steel before retiring. Although James passed away on March 11, 2011, his memory lives on through his family and the community he left behind.

His Daughter Imani Is Into Art

After their separation, Imani’s sole custody went to her mom. The former flames’ daughter is all grown up now and followed her passion for drama and acting by studying at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a BFA in Acting, Drama, and Theatre Arts.

When Imani was born, Jasmine recalled, “She came out and my ambition flew right out the window,” initially thinking she’d “just stay home and take care of the boo-boo.”

And now that same Imani has grown up and is doing well in her life. While studying at the Experimental Theater Wing, she sharpened her skills and developed her own artistic style, which shines in her animated poem ‘Paper Cuts,’ a two-minute project that really shows off her imaginative flair.

Currently, she is working as an Associate Producer at Team Epiphany. She joined the marketing agency as an intern and worked her way up to Associate Producer by November 2023.

Moreover, she’s also an artist and is really known for her cool paper-cut art. She had a solo exhibition at All Street NYC in March 2024.

He Didn’t Marry After Divorce And So His Ex

After parting ways, Terrence Duckett did not remarry, and similar is the story of his former wife.

Besides, Jasmine Guy has only one known relationship in the past. Back when she was shooting, A Different World, she was dating Dominic Hoffman, her co-star from the show.

A lot of people were not aware of this and when Guy first mentioned about this, it came as a shocker for many.
