He also suffered multiple abrasions and a pneumothorax, which caused his left lung to collapse—a scary situation for sure.
Right after the accident, the community stepped up in a big way, rallying around Slayton and his family. Hospital visits became the new normal for them as doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize Slayton. They decided that surgery was necessary to deal with the multiple breaks in his pelvis and to prevent further nerve damage. Despite these challenges, Slayton showed his fighting spirit.
