Ilia Topuria’s parents played an important role in shaping his path as a fighter. The UFC star was born in Halle, Westfalen, Germany, to Georgian parents who had left Abkhazia as refugees.
The Topuria family story is closely tied to sacrifice, discipline, and sport. His father had a background in wrestling, which later helped guide both brothers toward martial arts. Away from the gym, the family worked hard to build a stable life, with Topuria’s father taking on demanding manual jobs, including bricklaying.
Before Topuria became one of the biggest names in the UFC, his family was already supporting his dream through difficult choices and daily effort. Their belief gave him the space to compete, train, and slowly build the career that later brought him international attention.
Here is more to know about Ilia Topuria’s parents and family background.
Who Are Ilia Topuria’s Parents?
Topuria’s father and mother have mostly stayed away from public attention, and their personal names are not widely known. What is known, however, is that they are ethnic Georgians from Abkhazia, a region deeply affected by conflict in the 1990s.
Their family life was shaped by displacement and migration. After leaving Abkhazia, they moved to Germany, where Ilia was born in 1997. The family later returned to Georgia when Ilia was still young, before eventually making another major move to Spain. Topuria was around 15 when the future UFC star reunited with his parents in Alicante.
Before that reunion, Ilia and his older brother, Aleksandre, spent several years in Georgia while their parents worked to build a more stable life abroad.
His mother later played a direct role in opening the door to MMA. In Spain, the celebrity momma once noticed a man with cauliflower ear on a bus, recognized it as a sign of combat sports, and approached him about training her sons. The man turned out to be connected to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and invited them to the Climent Club gym.
Topuria’s father also supported the idea from the beginning. With his own background in wrestling, the old man understood the value of combat sports and encouraged his sons to take the path seriously. He even showed them videos of the Gracie family to build their interest in jiu-jitsu and MMA.
When Ilia later chose to focus fully on fighting instead of following a traditional school path, his father backed him rather than stopping him.
He Has an Older Brother
Ilia Topuria also has an older brother, Aleksandre Topuria, who is a professional MMA fighter. Aleksandre, nicknamed “El Conquistador,” was born on January 28, 1996, making him one year older than Ilia.
The two brothers have shared a close connection through martial arts for many years. Aleksandre has not only been Ilia’s brother but also one of his main training partners.
Aleksandre competes in the UFC’s bantamweight division and has built his own name in the sport. He holds a professional record of 7 wins and 1 loss and is currently on a five-fight winning streak.
Like Ilia, Aleksandre is known for sharp boxing, calm pressure, and strong grappling. He has also held a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt since 2018, which adds another layer to his fighting style.
