Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes (2006–2010) and Juliette Barnes on ABC/CMT’s Nashville (2012–2018), died on August 16, 2026, her representative confirmed to ABC News. She was 36, just five days away from her 37th birthday.

Panettiere was born to Lesley R. Vogel, a former soap opera actress, and Alan Lee “Skip” Panettiere, who worked as a captain with the New York City Fire Department. She and her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, were raised by their parents in Palisades, New York.

Tragedy had already struck the family three years earlier when Jansen, who also pursued a career as an actor, died on February 19, 2023, at the age of 28.

Over the years, Hayden’s parents and brother occasionally became part of the public conversation surrounding her life and career. Here is a closer look at her parents, her late brother Jansen, and her family’s ethnic background.

Who Are Hayden Panettiere’s Parents? Mom Lesley and Father Skip

Hayden was born on August 21, 1989, to Lesley R. Vogel and Alan Lee “Skip” Panettiere. She grew up in Palisades, New York, with her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere. Her parents came from very different professional backgrounds, with Lesley working in entertainment while Skip spent much of his career with the New York City Fire Department.

Lesley was an actress who appeared on the soap opera Loving and also had a role on All My Children. She later received credits as a film producer. Beyond her own work in entertainment, she played a major role in Hayden’s early career, managing her daughter from infancy and helping her land her first commercial at 11 months old.

Their professional relationship eventually became a source of tension. When Hayden was 19, she decided to end the business arrangement because she wanted Lesley to return to being simply her mother rather than her manager. In her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Hayden recalled that Lesley responded, “You owe me.” According to Hayden, the disagreement deeply damaged their relationship, and the two later stopped communicating.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, largely stayed outside the entertainment industry. He served with the New York City Fire Department, working as both a lieutenant and captain before retiring about six months before the September 11, 2001 attacks. He later worked in real estate and also received a brief acting credit in the 2010 film Behind the Secrets of Jonathan Sperry.

Hayden maintained a much closer relationship with her father. Later in her life, she moved back in with Skip and her stepmother as she tried to regain some stability in her personal life.

Her Parents’ Marriage, Legal Trouble, and Divorce

Lesley and Skip married in May 1987, but their marriage eventually ended after more than two decades together.

In August 2008, Skip was arrested following a domestic violence incident involving Lesley after a party. He was accused of striking her in the face and later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor spousal battery. He received two years of probation and was ordered to attend domestic violence counseling.

The couple separated that same year, although Lesley did not file for divorce until 2012. Their divorce became a lengthy financial dispute that continued for several years before being finalized in 2016.

During the proceedings, Hayden reportedly loaned her father $100,000 to help cover his legal expenses. The final divorce settlement required Skip to repay the money he owed his daughter.

Skip later moved on from the marriage and remarried a woman named Mekdem in 2017.

Her Brother Jansen Panettiere Died Before Her

Hayden had one sibling, her younger brother Jansen Panettiere, who also began working in entertainment as a child. The brother and sister shared a close relationship and occasionally appeared together on screen, including in Tiger Cruise and Racing Stripes.

Jansen built his own acting career with roles in film and television, including an appearance on The Walking Dead. Outside acting, he devoted much of his time to abstract art and regularly shared his colorful paintings with followers online. The siblings remained close as adults. About a month before his death, Jansen posted a photo of Hayden styling his hair on social media.

Jansen died unexpectedly on February 19, 2023, at the age of 28. He was found unresponsive at his apartment in New York after he failed to attend a scheduled meeting. His family later said that his death was caused by cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, together with complications involving his aortic valve.

Following his death, Hayden and her parents released a statement remembering Jansen for his smile, artwork, dry sense of humor, and creative personality.

The loss had a profound effect on Hayden. She later described losing her only sibling as feeling like she had lost “half of her soul.” As his older sister, she also struggled with guilt and the belief that she should have been able to protect him.

Hayden later spoke about how her grief affected both her emotional and physical health. She developed agoraphobia, became increasingly uncomfortable leaving her home, and said the stress surrounding Jansen’s death, including paparazzi attention at his funeral, made the period even more difficult. She also experienced a 40-pound weight gain while dealing with the loss.

Jansen remained an important part of Hayden’s life and writing in the years that followed. She dedicated her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, to her late brother.

Details on Hayden Panettiere’s Ethnicity and Religion

Panettiere was of White European descent, with family roots that included Italian, German, and English ancestry.

Her Italian heritage came from both sides of her family. Her paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother were children of Italian immigrants, making both of her parents partly Italian. Her surname, Panettiere, is also Italian and translates to “baker” in English.

Panettiere had another visible connection to her Italian background through a tattoo written in Italian on the side of her body.

As for religion, Hayden was raised in a Roman Catholic household. Catholicism was part of her upbringing, although she generally kept her personal religious beliefs private later in life.
