Robert Morris, the senior pastor of the Dallas-area megachurch Gateway Church, has resigned following allegations of a past inappropriate relationship with a minor. The Board of Elders of Gateway Church released a statement confirming his resignation after details of the allegations became public last week.

The scandal came to light when Cindy Clemishire disclosed that Morris had initiated an inappropriate relationship with her starting on Christmas Day in 1982, when she was just 12 years old. The abuse continued until 1987, Clemishire reported to WFAA. Her account was first published by The Wartburg Watch, a church watchdog blog. According to the Board of Elders, they were previously unaware of the severity of the allegations, which occurred long before Morris founded Gateway Church in 2000.

Morris, in a statement, admitted to “inappropriate sexual behavior,” including kissing and petting, which he confessed occurred several times over a few years while he was in his early twenties. He clarified that it did not involve intercourse but acknowledged the wrongfulness of his actions. The initial disclosure and confession of these incidents happened in 1987 when he was a pastor at Shady Grove Church in Grand Prairie, now one of Gateway’s locations.

In 1987, following the exposure of his actions, Robert stated he submitted himself to the elders of Shady Grove Church and the young lady’s father, stepped out of ministry, and underwent counseling. He met with the victim and her family in 1989, where they forgave him, although Clemishire indicated that her family never supported his return to ministry.

Clemishire expressed mixed feelings about Morris’ resignation, stating through her attorney that she is relieved he is no longer a pastor but disappointed that he was allowed to resign rather than being terminated. She emphasized that the responsibility of church leaders is to protect the people, not the image of the church or God.

The resignation comes shortly after Morris and his wife, Debbie, celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. In a poignant anniversary post, Morris had expressed deep gratitude and love for his wife, reflecting on their decades together.

This resignation marks a significant fall for Morris, who had been a leading figure in the evangelical community, known for his teachings on the “Blessed Life” and stewardship.

Has The Allegation Strained His Relationship With His Wife & Children?

Robert Morris’s long-standing marriage to Debbie, which began on May 3, 1980, faces a period of scrutiny following allegations of his past inappropriate behavior. The couple has shared over four decades together and welcomed three kids together, James, Josh, & Elaine, who are all married & settled in life.

Given the nature of the allegations—stemming from behavior before their marriage—questions arise about the potential impact on their relationship. However, without any public statements from Morris or his family regarding the current state of their personal relationships, it is difficult to ascertain the exact effect of the scandal on their marital bond.

The situation undeniably places their private life under the public eye, possibly challenging the stability and private understanding that has characterized their long marriage. Yet, in the absence of confirmations or comments from the family, any direct impact remains speculative. The couple’s history and resilience in public life may serve as their foundation as they navigate these challenges.
