Frank Beard, the legendary drummer who helped define the sound of ZZ Top for more than five decades, has died at the age of 77.

The musician died while in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, with members of his family by his side. His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

Beard leaves behind his longtime wife, Debbie Meredith, and three children. Although Beard spent much of his adult life performing before massive audiences, his marriage and home life remained relatively private.

Who Was Frank Beard’s Wife?

Frank Beard was married to Debbie Meredith for more than four decades.

The couple married in 1982, shortly after a turbulent period in Beard’s life during which he struggled with substance abuse and eventually sought treatment.

Unlike her famous husband, Meredith largely stayed outside the entertainment industry and rarely appeared in the media.

That privacy means relatively little verified information is publicly available about her career, background or personal life.

What is known is that she and Beard built a long-lasting marriage while his career with ZZ Top continued through several generations of rock music.

At the time of Beard’s death, Meredith remained his wife. AP also identified her as one of the surviving members of his immediate family.

How Long Were Frank Beard and Debbie Meredith Married?

Beard and Meredith married in 1982, meaning their marriage lasted for more than 40 years.

Their relationship covered an extraordinary stretch of Beard’s career.

By then, ZZ Top had already become one of America’s most recognizable rock bands. But some of the group’s biggest commercial successes were still ahead.

The band’s 1983 album Eliminator became a defining moment, helping ZZ Top reach an even larger audience during the MTV era. Songs including “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs” and “Gimme All Your Lovin'” became staples of the band’s catalog.

Beard remained behind the drums throughout that transformation.

Did Frank Beard and Debbie Meredith Have Children?

Yes. Frank Beard was the father of three children.

Multiple reports identify Rory and Nico Beard as twin sons, while Beard also had a daughter.

His children generally stayed away from the kind of public attention that surrounded their father’s career.

Beard appears to have deliberately maintained that separation between his public identity as a rock star and his private family life.

That was especially notable considering the scale of ZZ Top’s success.

The band sold more than 50 million records worldwide, according to the Associated Press, and became one of the most enduring rock groups in American music history.

Frank Beard Was Married Once Before Debbie Meredith

Debbie Meredith was Beard’s second wife.

Before meeting Meredith, Beard married Catherine Alexander in 1978. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1981.

The following year, he married Meredith.

That period coincided with a major personal transformation for Beard.

He later spoke publicly about struggling with drug addiction during ZZ Top’s rise to fame. Beard eventually entered rehabilitation and got sober, allowing him to rebuild his personal life while continuing his career.

Frank Beard and His Family Lived in Texas

Despite decades of international touring, Beard remained closely connected to Texas.

He lived on a ranch in Richmond, Texas, outside Houston.

It was also there that Beard spent his final days.

Reuters reported that Beard died in hospice care at his Richmond ranch with family members at his side.

Texas was inseparable from Beard’s professional identity as well.

ZZ Top became famous for combining blues, rock and boogie with an unmistakably Texan image. Beard, Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill formed one of rock music’s most stable lineups, performing together from around 1970 until Hill’s death in 2021.

Frank Beard’s Death Leaves Billy Gibbons as the Last Member of ZZ Top’s Classic Trio

Beard’s death comes five years after the death of longtime ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, who died in 2021.

Beard, Hill and guitarist Billy Gibbons had performed together for more than five decades.

Following Beard’s death, Gibbons paid tribute to his longtime bandmate, describing him as a friend, collaborator and an exceptionally innovative drummer.

Gibbons also said Beard’s distinctive backbeat had been central to ZZ Top’s sound and indicated that the band intended to continue performing, as Beard had wanted.

For fans, Beard will be remembered as the quiet rhythmic force behind one of America’s most recognizable rock bands.

For Debbie Meredith and his children, however, his death is the loss of a husband and father whose family life remained largely outside the spotlight throughout his extraordinary career.
