Obi Ndefo, a distinguished actor known for his acclaimed roles in television and film, has passed away at the age of 51. The sad news was shared by his sister, Nkem Ndefo, in a heartfelt Facebook post on Aug. 31. She expressed her deep sorrow and relief that her late brother is now at peace with a caption that read, “Heartbroken at the loss of my younger brother 💔 and knowing he’s finally at peace ❤️‍🩹🕊️✨.”

Born in 1973, Obi carved out a notable career in the entertainment industry, highlighted by his memorable portrayal of Rak’nor in Stargate SG-1, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Wayans Bros., and 3rd Rock from the Sun. However, his most impactful role was as Bodie Wells, the brother-in-law of Katie Holmes in Dawson’s Creek from 1998 to 2002.

After the news of his passing, Mary-Margaret Humes, a co-star from Dawson’s Creek, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram with a lengthy caption,

“These words don’t come easy 💔It’s hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend. You always were and always will be a bright shining light. What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life’s challenges of recent. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace sweet warrior.”

In addition to his work on screen, Obi was a fervent advocate for the arts and dedicated to youth empowerment through his organization, Arts for a Better Tomorrow.

Tragically, Obi’s life was drastically altered in 2019 when a hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles led to the amputation of both his legs.

In response to his needs following the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched in 2020. It successfully raised over $200,000, which helped cover the costs of prosthetic legs and modifications to his Silver Lake home.

Despite the horrific incident, Obi not only continued his artistic pursuits but also embraced his role as a yoga teacher, focusing on his health and helping others with their recovery processes. His initial exposure to yoga occurred during his studies at the Yale School of Drama.

He Was Born To Interracial Parents

Obi was rooted in a vibrant mix of cultural backgrounds, thanks to his biracial heritage. His father, Ejike Ndefo, is an African-American whose strong connection to his Nigerian roots was highlighted in a poignant Facebook post by Obi’s sister, Nkem.

The post featured a linocut carved by their father to support relief efforts during the 1967-1970 Biafran war. He had relocated to the United States to pursue a PhD in engineering at UC Berkeley, a move that coincided with a tumultuous period in Nigeria. Amid this challenging time, Ejike proactively organized relief efforts, drawing on the talents of the local Igbo community, which was abundant in artists, performers, and scholars.

On the other side of Obi’s family tree, his mother, Susan Matranga, a cancer survivor who is White, shared a close bond with her late son, especially evident during the challenging times following his tragic incident in Los Angeles.

Living together at the time, Susan was deeply moved by her son’s unwavering positivity. Her observations at the hospital where Obi was treated resonate with the impact of his spirit on others. She described how his openness and grace had a transformative effect on those around him, likening it to eggs tapping against a bowl and cracking open.

Amidst these family dynamics, Ejike and Susan eventually divorced. Ejike is now married to Obi’s stepmother, Vickie Ndefo, a former Director of Computing Skills Development at Aerospace.

Ndefo Wasn’t Married at His Passing

Ndefo was unmarried at the time of his death, with his Facebook status confirming his single status. His deep commitment to yoga and artistic pursuits likely took precedence over forming romantic relationships.
