As the world remembers comedy legend Bob Newhart, who passed away on July 18, 2024, his son Timothy Newhart is finding comfort in the outpouring of love for his dad. The second of Bob’s four children recently shared his thoughts on Facebook, giving fans a peek into the family’s feelings during this tough time.
He opened up about how his view of his father’s fame has changed over the years:
Most celebrities’ kids struggle with their parent’s notoriety, but of late I’ve really come to embrace Dad’s legacy for this exact reason. His career was remarkable, but he was always a through-and-through authentic Chicago native.

Tim Made His Career Far From the Glamor Entertainment Industry
While Tim grew up with a front-row seat to Hollywood, he chose a different path for his own career. Despite brief stints in the entertainment world, including work on the show Ferris Bueller, he found his true calling in education.
Since February 1995, Tim has been shaping young minds as a history and social studies teacher at Harvard-Westlake School. This career move came after he studied Irish Literature at the Catholic University of America.
His early brush with showbiz included roles as an associate for 13 episodes of Get a Life and as a production assistant on a few TV episodes, including one of his dad’s shows Newhart.
He Is A Proud Father of Three
Timothy and his ex-wife Eve Makoff share three children: sons Timothy Jr. and William, and daughter Caroline.
Family seems to be a central part of his life, with his kids often spending time with their famous grandfather. In 2010, he shared a sweet moment on Facebook, posting a photo of Bob showing young Timothy planes at Santa Monica airport. He proudly noted that his daughter Caroline, who took the picture, had the eye of a “pint-sized Margaret Bourke-White!“
The Newhart family bond extends across generations. In 2016, Tim’s daughter Caroline joined her dad, grandfather Bob, grandmother Ginnie, and cousin Bella at the Emmy Awards. Bob was up for a guest actor nod for his role in The Big Bang Theory that year.
While Tim is currently single, his ex, Eve, has found love again with Steve Nuchols.
