Andy Williams, the professional wrestler known to fans as The Butcher, died at age 48 after suffering a medical emergency during a wrestling match in Pennsylvania. His death was confirmed on September 6, 2026, hours after he required CPR and emergency treatment at an Enjoy Wrestling event.
Williams was competing alongside his longtime tag-team partner, The Blade, when he suddenly went down near the end of their match at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale, Pennsylvania. Medical personnel at the venue immediately began treating him, and paramedics later used chest compressions and a defibrillator before he was transported to a hospital.
Williams Died After a Medical Emergency During His Match
He was taking part in Enjoy Wrestling’s five-year anniversary show on Saturday, September 5. He teamed with Jesse Guilmette, better known as The Blade, against TME in a tag-team championship match.
According to accounts from people at the event, nothing appeared seriously wrong for most of the bout. Near its conclusion, however, Williams’ legs buckled, and he went to the floor. The Blade called for assistance and initially tried to help his partner back to his feet. Williams then went down again and lost consciousness.
Enjoy Wrestling later confirmed the emergency in a public statement, saying:
“Andy collapsed at the end of his match this evening.”
Doctors working at the event administered CPR until an ambulance arrived. The promotion canceled the remainder of the show and sent spectators home while Williams was taken for emergency treatment.
What Was Andy Williams’ Cause of Death?
As of September 6, Williams’ official cause of death has not been announced.
Reports describing CPR, chest compressions, and the use of a defibrillator have prompted speculation that he may have suffered cardiac arrest. One wrestling outlet also described the emergency as suggesting cardiac arrest because of the treatment administered. Still, there is currently no medical examiner finding confirming whether cardiac arrest, a heart attack, an underlying heart condition, or another medical problem caused his death.
Reports following Williams’ death said an autopsy was expected to provide more information about what happened. Until those results or an official ruling are released, describing his death simply as the result of a medical emergency following his match is the most accurate account.
Did He Have Any Known Health Issues or Illness?
There was no publicly reported chronic illness immediately preceding Williams’ death, and available reports have not identified a previously diagnosed heart condition.
Williams had, however, discussed health problems at earlier points in his career.
One of the most notable occurred in 2020, when he contracted COVID-19 shortly before an AEW World Championship match against Jon Moxley. Speaking later on Talk Is Jericho, Williams revealed how difficult the match had been physically because he had only recently been medically cleared.
“I just came back from COVID. I got cleared the day before, so my lungs were still messed up.”
Williams said at the time that he believed he should not have wrestled the match because he had not fully recovered. He described the physical experience as unlike anything he had previously encountered.
The Butcher Built His Wrestling Career After Years in Music
Born Andrew J. Williams on December 12, 1977, in Buffalo, New York, Williams followed an unusual path into professional wrestling. Long before becoming The Butcher on national television, he was best known as a founding guitarist of the influential hardcore band Every Time I Die, formed in the late 1990s.
He eventually returned to wrestling training and made his official in-ring debut in 2016. Williams later formed a regular partnership with The Blade, with the pair establishing themselves on the independent circuit before reaching a much larger television audience.
The Butcher and The Blade made their surprise AEW debut on the November 27, 2019 episode of Dynamite, attacking Cody Rhodes. Williams subsequently became a familiar part of AEW’s tag-team division and also made appearances connected to Ring of Honor.
His AEW contract expired in June 2026, after which Williams and The Blade continued working together on independent events. Only months later, the two were in the ring together at Enjoy Wrestling when Williams suffered the medical emergency that proved fatal.
